Welcome to the Department of Mathematics at the Indian Institute of Science. Our department is a vibrant hub of discovery, where faculty members, students, post-doctoral fellows and (short and long term) visitors work together to explore the beauty and power of mathematics — from its purest forms to its applications across science and technology. The department regularly hosts seminars, workshops, and conferences, creating an environment where ideas are exchanged and collaborations flourish.
We take pride not only in advancing the frontiers of knowledge but also in nurturing the next generation of mathematicians. Our programs are designed to challenge, inspire, and equip students with the tools to think critically, creatively, and rigorously.
I invite you to explore our community and join us in celebrating the excitement of mathematical inquiry.
The KRS Sastry Prize honours an Indian mathematician, working in India, for their long-term contributions of fundamental importance to any branch of mathematics. The prize will be awarded once every four years, beginning with 2026.
